Remember the Alamo

In spite of the pans by the professional critics, and the low box office performance, I thought the new move, The Alamo, was great. As a native Texan visiting the actual site last Christmas, I was struck by the positive reviews by the Alamo guides about the forthcoming movie. They were particularly bullish about the historical accuracy of the film. And in fact as far as my memory could recall the movie scenes did seem to line up quite well with the models of the site on exhibit in the real Alamo.

Here is some interesting trivia about the name Alamo.
* Alamo is the name of the Cottonwood tree in Spanish
* The name for the place in San Antonio originated from the hometown in Mexico of soldiers stationed there
* There is a dinosaur by the name: Alamosuarus. It has no relation to the familiar place in San Antonio (although movie critics might want to make that connection). The dinosaur was named after a place in New Mexico where it was discovered which in turn was named after a large cottonwood tree

I’m sure you’ve always wanted to know about the above. You can read more at the following places:
* The Alamo Home Page (DTR)
* Alamosaurus
